Le crayon en l’air! I can’t do otherwise, as person and journalist. I do not write opinion articles. Sometimes during interviews I ask tough questions. That’s it. Nothing more. So I’m safe here in our hamlet in Brittany. At least, I think so.
Brittany is also grieving, like the rest of the world. We are indignant, angry, feel powerless and strong at the same time. You will not get us! We continue! That were also the thoughts of Charbonnier, Cabu, Tignous, Wolinski, Honoré, Merabet, Maris, Renaud, Ourrad, Cayat, Boisseau and Brinsolaro .. until Wednesday, January 7th. Just before 12.00 hours, armed men ran into the office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris. They shouted Allahu Akbar, calling people by their first names before they killed them. The world stands still. For them. For all.
According to science the first homo sapiens – modern man – was born in Africa between 150,000 and 280,000 years ago. Now it’s 2015. Mankind equals civilization. But nothing could be further from the truth. I once wrote a thesis with the title: ‘I am me. You are you. The Parisian assassins have never read this thesis. I am sure. Muslims, Christians, atheists, mentally disabled people, elderly, artists, computer nerds … Assassins, listen! We are all HUMAN. Civilization. Live and let live!
It is a shock. The world despairs. Yet I see something positive. The world also shows consolation. Courage. The world continues. People are gathering. Everywhere. In Amsterdam, London, Paris, throughout Europe and beyond. In big cities and in villages. I have a little hope that this solidarity will continue, increases. Because what the world needs is not only UN crayon en l’air. Many. Je suis. Nous sommes.
